The Lore of March

I’m so happy it’s March!! Though I celebrate the true start of spring come March 20th (the astronomical observation), at this point in the winter, I happily welcome meteorological spring today! Anything to keep my mind busy with until I can plunge my hands back into the soil. Until then, here’s a little March lore to kick off the month.

March is named after Mars, the Roman god of war. Originally, March was the first month of the year according to the Roman calendar. Its name is derived from the Latin word Martius. The Anglo-Saxons deemed March,  Hrēðmonath in honor of  Hreða, a pagan fertility goddess.

March babies are born under the zodiacs of water sign Pisces (February 19–March 20) or fire sign Aries (March 21-April 19). The pair of Pisces fish swimming in opposite directions symbolizes our duality and adaptability with a sensitivity to our emotions and heightened creativity. Aries the Ram symbolizes strength and fearlessness.

Robin March Bird of the Month

Bird of the Month is the ravishing Robin. Seen not only as a symbol of new starts/rebirth, it’s also known to bring good fortune.

Deer are the animals of the month. They symbolize gentleness, kindness and peace.

The Worm Moon is a common name for March’s Full Moon, as this is the time of year when earthworms begin to wiggle about beckoning Robins to come take a nibble. Some Native Americans tribes refer to it as the Crow Moon or Hard Crust Moon. I can very much relate to the Hard Crust reference as March’s weather warms up enough during the day to melt the top layer of snow, but evening’s cold freezes it over, creating a thick crust that you crunch through with every step. The Celts call it the Seed Moon for March begins the season of Ostara and signals the time to start sowing your seeds.

From the Celtic Tree of Life, which follows the lunar months, March’s two trees are the Ash tree (February 18-March 17th) and the Alder (March 18-April 14th). Ash, one of the three trees scarred to the Druids, is known for its association with vivid dreamwork and spiritual journeys. Known as the ‘World Tree’, Ash is thought to be a bridge between worlds. The Alder tree flourishes along riverbanks during this time of year. It’s been said that Fairies use alder twigs in their magic. Flutes crafted from this tree call out to the Air spirits.

Daffodils are March’s birth flower. Much like the Robin, these joyous blooms symbolize new beginnings and bring good luck.

March has two birthstones: Aquamarine and Bloodstone. Aquamarine embodies serenity and tranquility, while Bloodstones stand for courage and guard against evil.

March’s color is light blue. Light blue connects not only with the gem of the month, Aquamarine, but ties into Pisces as well.

Cheers to a beautiful month ahead! May Spring visit your doorstep soon!

Our life is March weather, savage and serene in one hour.
