pinecone birdfeeder

be a bird’s best friend with these easy-to-make treats. All you need are pinecones, peanut butter & birdseed!

The drab chore of doing dishes is made all the better by the fabulous bird watching I get to do out my kitchen window as nuthatch and woodpeckers flock to nibble at the pinecone bird feeders I have hung out on my deck.

They’re super easy to make and a great project to have the kiddos help you with.

YOU’LL NEED:

  • Pinecones

  • Peanut Butter or Suet

  • Birdseed (I use black-oil sunflower seed as that’s my bird pals favorite treat, but use a seed mix of your choice)

  • Aluminum foil

  • Baking Sheet

  • Mixing bowl

  • Spatula or butter knife

  • String

  • Scissors

First step is to prep the pinecones…by the way, this step actually preserves the pinecones, so you can use or save them for lots of different craft needs.

Preheat the oven to 200•F.

Line the baking sheet in aluminum foil.

Place pinecones and bake for 30 minutes or until the resin becomes clear.

*Pinecones can be flammable, so do not leave the oven unattended please.*

Once baked and cooled, tie a string to the top of the cone for hanging.

Using a spatula, coat the cone in peanut butter or suet.

Place birdseed in mixing bowl.

Roll the pinecone in the bird seed, smushing it into the crevices of the pinecone…but with a gentle hand.

Then hang outside on a branch or place that you’ll be able to gaze at.

Grab a cup of tea and wait for the birdies!
